Cannes - Saba:
American actor Denzel Washington was surprised to receive the Honorary Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival on Monday evening, which festival organizers said was a recognition of his distinguished career.
Washington, 70, was in the South of France to attend the premiere of Spike Lee's "Heist to Lost," an adaptation of Akira Kurosawa's "High and Low."
Washington, who was joined on the red carpet by co-stars A$AP Rocky and Jeffrey Wright, plays David King in the crime thriller, his fifth collaboration with Spike Lee.
Washington, who has won two Oscars, has ranged from Black activist Malcolm X to the heroic drunken pilot in "Flight."
Washington won his second Oscar in 2002 for his role in "Training Day," following his first win in 1990 for "Glory."
He directed and starred in the 2007 film "The Great Debaters," about a professor who coached a debate team at a black American college and led it to national glory. He also produced and starred in the drama "Anton Fisher."
American actor Robert De Niro received the previously announced Honorary Palme d'Or for Lifetime Achievement at the festival's opening ceremony last week, using his acceptance speech to call for protests against US President Donald Trump.
"Hast to Lost" is scheduled to open in US cinemas on August 22.
