On Saturday, May 17, 2025, the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources, Dr. Radwan Al-Rubai, and the Governor of Amran, Dr. Faisal Jahman, inaugurated the project for the construction of five water lakes (Kurof) in the Amran Basin. The project is funded by the General Authority for Water Resources, with an estimated cost of 238 million riyals.
The project aims to collect rainwater and floods to recharge groundwater and address the decline in water levels due to excessive depletion. The organizers explained that the choice of sites was made after thorough studies and surveys.
Minister Al-Rubai confirmed that the project is in implementation of the leadership's directives and aims to enhance the utilization of rainwater, calling for linking drilling permits for wells with the contributions of their owners to recharge groundwater.
For his part, Governor of Amran considered the project the beginning of a strategic phase in water resource management, emphasizing the importance of cooperation between the community and drilling contractors for its success. He announced a mechanism to open a special account to ensure its continuity.
The head of the water resources authority, engineer Hadi Qareea, indicated that the capacity of the lakes is 235,000 cubic meters as part of the first phase of a plan that includes 75 sites, highlighting the project's role in reducing the damage caused by floods and building sustainable water infrastructure.
