The Academic Accreditation and Quality Assurance Council of Higher Education organized a workshop on Saturday to discuss and approve the draft document of the national classification system for public and private higher education institutions.
The workshop, attended by presidents of public and private universities, deans of development and quality assurance centers in educational institutions, and deans of community colleges, aimed to develop a national classification system for higher education institutions that aligns with the national environment and identity. It also sought to introduce the classification system, define its principles and objectives, and review its methodology, references, governance, as well as develop appropriate standards and indicators for its implementation.
During the opening session, the Minister of Education and Scientific Research, Hassan Al-Saadi, emphasized the importance of completing this national project, especially amid the ongoing aggression against Yemen. He praised the efforts of those in charge of the project, which instills pride and honor.
Al-Saadi commended the level of attendance and active participation in discussing and enriching the project based on a set of standards and indicators that enhance the competitive advantage of universities at the national, regional, and international levels.
He urged all participants to engage in serious discussions and benefit from the observations and suggestions presented to enrich the project, stressing the need to consider the country's reality when preparing programs and reforms undertaken by the ministry and the council.
For his part, the Deputy Minister of Education and Scientific Research, Dr. Hatem Al-Duais, affirmed that the national classification project for higher education institutions aims to enhance competitiveness among universities and contribute to improving their academic and technical performance.
He acknowledged the efforts of the Supreme Council for Science, Technology, and Innovation in this regard, emphasizing the importance of integration and partnership with all relevant stakeholders to accomplish this project.
During the opening session, attended by the Undersecretary for Secondary Education, Dr. Zaid Al-Hadour, the Undersecretary for Higher Education, Dr. Ibrahim Luqman, highlighted the importance of the complementary role between the sector and the Accreditation Council in implementing several joint projects and activities. He considered the national classification project for universities one of the most important projects that had not received adequate attention in previous periods.
Luqman stressed that some universities need support to fulfill their intended role in education, scientific research, and community service, emphasizing the necessity of promoting awareness of the national classification system for higher education institutions in academic and research circles.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Academic Accreditation and Quality Assurance Council, Dr. Ahmed Al-Haboub, and his deputy, Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Shaibani, presented the concepts, definitions, principles, objectives, references, levels, and relationships of the national university classification system with academic accreditation, as well as its impact on enhancing academic and educational performance and the quality of university outcomes.
International expert Dr. Mohammed Al-Sharjabi and quality expert Dr. Sharaf Al-Humdi reviewed the methodology for preparing the national classification document and its governance. The Secretary-General of the Academic Accreditation Council, Dr. Mohammed Dhaifallah, and national expert Dr. Numan Fayrouz, presented the classification standards and indicators.
Dr. Anwar Masoud addressed the mechanisms and methods for governing the classification implementation procedures, while Dr. Nasser Al-Qadami highlighted the steps taken by the Science and Technology Authority in ranking Yemeni universities within the innovation index.
