Beijing - Saba:
Chinese President Xi Jinping announced Tuesday during a major regional forum in Beijing that his country wants to strengthen its relations with Latin American and Caribbean countries at a time of "confrontation between blocs," criticizing the United States for "bullying."
In a speech delivered at the opening ceremony of the fourth ministerial meeting of the China-CELAC Forum (Community of Latin American and Caribbean States), Xi said, "Only through unity and cooperation can countries safeguard global peace and stability and promote development and prosperity worldwide." He denounced actions that demonstrate "bullying and hegemony," a clear reference to the United States.
In his address to the delegates, the Chinese president emphasized that "there are no winners in tariff wars or trade wars." Xi also warned that "bullying and hegemony will only lead to self-isolation."
"The world today is undergoing rapid transformations unseen in a century, amid multiple intertwined and interconnected risks," he added.
Chinese President Xi Jinping pledged $9.2 billion in loans to Latin American and Caribbean countries during a press conference on Thursday, during a speech delivered at a major regional forum in Beijing.
"Only through unity and cooperation can countries safeguard global peace and stability and promote development and prosperity worldwide," Xi said.
The Chinese president's speech comes a day after Washington and Beijing announced they had reached an agreement that significantly reduces the hefty tariffs they have imposed on each other for 90 days.
Under the agreement, the United States agreed to reduce its tariffs on Chinese goods to 30%, while China agreed to reduce its tariffs on American goods to 10%.
This agreement represents a significant de-escalation in the tense trade war between the world's two largest economies.
