On Tuesday, Medecins du Monde accused the Israeli occupation of using hunger as a "weapon of war," warning that the ongoing blockade of Gaza is exacerbating severe malnutrition in the Strip.
The organization said in a press release that severe malnutrition in Gaza "has reached levels similar to those seen in countries facing long-term humanitarian crises lasting for decades."
The organization added that data collected from six health centers it runs in the Gaza Strip highlighted "human responsibility for hunger in Gaza."
It noted that "the rates of severe malnutrition among pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and children are dependent on the Israeli authorities' decisions to allow or prohibit the entry of humanitarian aid."
The medical organization confirmed that the peak levels of severe malnutrition it observed in 2024 "coincided with a sharp decline in the number of trucks transporting aid monthly to Gaza."
She noted that the peak of acute malnutrition among children reached 17 percent during a period when aid was significantly reduced.
