US President Donald Trump on Sunday commented on Russian President Vladimir Putin's offer to hold direct negotiations with Ukraine in Istanbul.
Trump said, according to Sputnik, that "today could be a great day for both Russia and Ukraine," adding that "this step represents a great opportunity to achieve peace between the two countries, which could be the beginning of a resolution to the ongoing conflict."
He stated that he "will continue to work with Russia and Ukraine to ensure the end of the crisis," explaining that "the United States wants to focus on reconstruction and trade."
Trump added: "Imagine the hundreds of thousands of lives that will be saved as this endless bloodbath ends, hopefully, and will end. It will be a whole new, much better world."
Earlier today, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a proposal to resume direct negotiations with Ukraine without any preconditions.
Putin also announced that he would discuss with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan the possibility of holding these talks in Istanbul, emphasizing the important role the Turkish president could play in facilitating dialogue between the two sides.
He indicated that negotiations could begin on May 15 in Istanbul, calling for constructive talks between the two sides.
