Poll: Most Democrats support restrictions on arms to Israel

Poll: Most Democrats support restrictions on arms to Israel

Washington - Saba:

A new poll conducted by Data for Progress and Zetio reveals that 71 percent of potential Democratic voters in the upcoming May primary elections in the United States support restricting military aid to Israel until it stops its genocide in Gaza and supports Palestinian rights.

The poll, published by Zetio, indicated that "only 20 percent of respondents chose the more moderate option," which is to continue supporting Israel and its "right to defend itself," while "encouraging efforts to limit civilian harm and promote lasting peace," a position adopted by the administration of former US President Joe Biden.

The poll noted that support for restricting aid was highest among voters under the age of 45, with 80 percent of them favoring restricting aid, while only 13 percent supported maintaining the current policy.

The report explained that these results reflect a growing trend within Democrats toward a more progressive approach, not only on the Palestinian issue, but also on many other issues, such as economic policy, healthcare, climate policy, and immigration.

It added that the Democratic Party is facing an identity crisis after its loss in the 2024 presidential election.

It noted that the new data is another indication of Democratic voters' desire to break with the party establishment in favor of more progressive policies.

The report noted that former Vice President Kamala Harris's campaign's refusal to deviate from Biden's policies, particularly regarding the Israeli enemy and Palestine, contributed to her election loss.

It added that the months following Donald Trump's inauguration witnessed a sharp escalation in violence against Palestinians and increased repression of their supporters in the United States.

The report concluded that the new polls confirm that Democratic voters have adopted a position clearly different from that maintained by the Biden-Harris administration in its final year.
