Russian media reported that a patient in Novosibirsk underwent a successful heart surgery using a robot controlled remotely by a heart surgeon based in Shanghai, China.
According to the Russian news agency TASS, heart surgeon Chi Jin, while in Shanghai, remotely operated the robot to perform a unique surgery to remove the patient's arrhythmia in Novosibirsk. This was made possible by the Stereotaxis robotic system, the only system in Russia that allows remote catheter control inside the heart using powerful magnets.
The procedure lasted one and a half hours and was performed under the supervision of an international team of doctors who gathered in Russia for the Second Siberian Summit on Atrial Fibrillation Treatment.
Before the surgery, doctors created a 3D electronic model of the patient's atrium to accurately identify the area causing the arrhythmia. This model was sent to the surgeon, who, during the procedure, controlled the robot in Russia using a regular computer mouse and sent signals to the magnets that guided the catheter to the source of the arrhythmia.
According to available information, the special equipment used in the surgery kept the patient awake and pain-free during the procedure. Russian specialists confirmed that this method is safer than traditional surgeries and that the technology itself could become a breakthrough in remote surgery.
