In a joint article published in Foreign Policy magazine, the leaders of Malaysia (Anwar Ibrahim), Colombia (Gustavo Petro), and South Africa (Cyril Ramaphosa) criticized the international system for failing to confront what they described as Israel’s “genocidal war” on the Gaza Strip.
The three leaders argued that the diplomatic, military, and political support of powerful countries for Israel has led to a systematic violation of international law, negatively impacting UN principles such as human rights, sovereign equality among states, and the prohibition of genocide.
They also described former US President Donald Trump’s proposal for Gaza as “ethnic cleansing” and a flagrant violation of international law. They stressed that the system that allowed the killing of 61,000 people in Gaza is not only a failure, but has actually failed to achieve justice and protect civilians.
