Moscow - Saba:
A laser distance measuring device will be installed to measure the distance to the moon with an accuracy of less than one millimeter, rector of the Russian Moscow State University said late on Monday.
This device will be installed in the Caucasian Mountain Observatory of the Astronomical Institute of Moscow University in the Republic of Karachay-Cherkessia, Russian news agencies quoted Victor Sadovnichiy as saying in his speech to the festive meeting held on the occasion of the 270th anniversary of the university.
"Our Caucasian Mountain Observatory has broad scientific prospects thanks to its unique equipment, and in the near future we plan to install a lunar laser rangefinder there, which will allow us to determine the distance to the moon with a high accuracy of less than one millimeter," he added.
The rector of the university noted that the use of this device would help solve a number of fundamental scientific problems in the theory of lunar motion and gravitational physics.
It is worth noting that the construction of the Caucasian Mountain Observatory of the University began in 2006.
