SANA'A September 07. 2024 (Saba) — The Operations Room of the Supreme Committee for Emergency Response and Flood Damage convened (SERC) on Saturday to address strategies for safeguarding against thunderstorms and rockslides.
The meeting, led by Ammar al-Harib, Vice Chairman of the Chamber and Undersecretary of the Ministry of Administration and Local and Rural Development for the Local Development Sector, focused on the urgent need to mitigate the effects of these natural hazards.
Al-Harib reported that over 160 deaths have been attributed to thunderstorms this year, with 22 fatalities occurring in the past two days alone.
Al-Harib emphasized the importance of taking preventive measures to minimize human and property losses, particularly given the heavy rainfall affecting the country.
The meeting highlighted the need to prioritize the installation of lightning rods in heavily impacted areas to improve safety.
A key resolution was to organize an awareness workshop involving various stakeholders, including media outlets, civil society organizations, and mosque preachers, to educate the public on thunderstorm safety and prevention.
Additionally, the Operations Room discussed measures to prevent rockslides, which are exacerbated by heavy rains and floods.
Maj. Gen. Ibrahim al-Muayyad, head of the Civil Defense Authority, underscored the need for field assessments to identify and address areas at risk of rock collapses.
The meeting concluded with a call for enhanced cooperation among government agencies and community organizations to protect citizens from both thunderstorms and rockslides during this critical period.
Major General al-Muayyad reiterated the Authority’s commitment to supporting these efforts and ensuring effective coordination.
