NIAMEY September 07. 2024 (Saba) — Severe floods in West Africa have displaced approximately 950,000 people and significantly disrupted the start of the school year.
According to a statement from Save the Children, the floods have exacerbated risks of disease and hunger, with many schools now overcrowded with displaced families.
The floods have affected over 649,000 people in Niger, 225,000 in Nigeria, and 73,000 in Mali.
The Niger government reports over 700,000 displaced and 273 fatalities since the rainy season began.
In Nigeria, 29 of 36 states have been impacted with rising water levels causing 200 deaths, damaging 115,000 hectares of farmland, and increasing child hunger by 25% compared to last year.
