PARIS September 03. 2024 (Saba) - At least 12 people, including children, were killed when a boat carrying migrants capsized on Tuesday, in the English Channel, separating France and Britain, according to French authorities.
Agence France-Presse quoted French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin as saying that the sinking incident occurred off the coast of the town of Wimereux, in the Pas-de-Calais region, northern France. He revealed the initial toll of the incident, which amounted to 12 dead, in addition to two missing people and a number of injured.
He stressed that the French authorities are making great efforts to find the missing and provide the necessary care to the injured.
In turn, the mayor of Boulogne-sur-Mer, Frederic Cuvillier, said: “There were approximately 70 people on board the ship, while marine emergency crews rescued 65 people, a number of whom were in critical condition and in need of urgent medical care.”
