KINSHASA September 03. 2024 (Saba) - At least 129 people were killed and 59 injured during an attempted mass escape from Makala prison late on Monday in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Interior Minister Jacquemin Shabani wrote on Platform X: "According to preliminary information, 129 people were killed, including 24 with gunshot wounds after the warning, while the rest were killed as a result of crushing or strangulation.
In addition, there are 59 injured people who are being cared for by the Government. There have also been several cases of rape of women.
The Government was satisfied with the resumption of calm and expressed its condolences to the families of the victims.
The circumstances of the incident are currently being investigated.
Actualite on Monday quoted Samuel Mpemba, deputy justice minister of the Democratic Republic of Congo, as saying that two people were killed in prisoner riots and an attempted mass escape from Makala prison.
Makala prison is designed to accept 1.5,000 people, but it has been noticeably overcrowded for a long time.
