KIEV August 27. 2024 (Saba) - The Ukrainian authorities announced Tuesday the killing of at least three people in Ukraine, as a result of new Russian shelling that hit its territory.
This came after large-scale strikes carried out by Moscow, which are considered among the largest since the start of the Russian special military operation two years ago.
"Two people were killed in Kryvyi Rih region in central Ukraine in an unspecified Russian attack, while one person was killed in a drone attack in the southern Zaporizhia region," local Ukrainian officials told AFP via Telegram.
Early on Tuesday, Ukrainian authorities declared air alert across most of the country, except for Kyiv.
This came as Russian bombers and drones were spotted taking off towards Ukraine at dawn.
The Ukrainian Air Force said in a statement published around 4:00 a.m. (01:00 GMT) on Telegram that "Tu-95MS bombers took off from the Engels air base (southwest of Russia)."
"The missiles could enter Ukrainian airspace within about two hours," she said, adding that Russian drones had also taken off.
The warning came a day after Russia launched hundreds of drones and missiles into Ukraine, targeting energy facilities in particular, in an attack that killed at least four people and wounded about 20.
The attack damaged the power grid, already damaged by the war, and forced authorities to schedule power outages in several areas.
