SANA'A August 07. 2024 (Saba) — The Shura Council convened its third meeting of the first session on Wednesday, led by Council Speaker Mohammed al-Adaroos.
The session, which included the Minister of State for Parliamentary and Shura Council Affairs Dr. Ali Abu Halika, Minister of Fisheries Ahmed al-Zubairi, Deputy Minister Taha Khater, and Executive Director of the Binian Development Foundation Dr. Mohammed al-Madani, was dedicated to discussing the Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources Committee's report titled "Fisheries and Marine Life as a Pillar of Economic Development and Food Security."
The report highlighted the crucial role of the fisheries sector in providing food and employment, emphasizing the need for concerted efforts to address challenges and advance the sector to support the national economy. It revealed that the sector has incurred substantial losses—exceeding 14 billion Y.R—due to the US-Saudi-Emirati aggression, leading to severe damage to infrastructure, water pollution, production halts, and depletion of fish stocks.
Chairman al-Aidaroos underscored the importance of advancing the fisheries sector as a cornerstone of food security, job creation, and sustainable development. He noted that Yemen's extensive coastline provides a valuable resource of diverse fish and marine life that must be effectively utilized for economic growth and enhanced food security.
Al-Aidaroos commended the Agriculture Committee for its comprehensive report, which includes strategies to improve fisheries performance and strengthen the sector's contribution to a robust and sustainable economy. He also praised Bunyan Foundation for its leadership in service and development work.
The meeting featured a presentation by Agriculture and Fisheries Committee Chairman Eng. Abdulsalam al-Nahari, who outlined the report's framework, methodology, and key findings. Al-Nahari detailed the sector's challenges, including direct targeting by the coalition, and presented recommendations for addressing these issues.
The report concluded with several recommendations aimed at enhancing fisheries production and industry development.
Key recommendations included strengthening regulation, improving infrastructure, supporting investment, and promoting education and training in fishing techniques. It also emphasized the importance of scientific research, innovation, marketing, and local support for fishermen.
Further, the recommendations highlighted the need for environmental protection programs to safeguard marine ecosystems, encourage ecotourism, and utilize modern marketing strategies.
The meeting included discussions on the implementation of the report's recommendations, focusing on effective mechanisms to advance the fisheries sector, prevent overfishing, and protect coral reefs.
The Shura Council approved the Agriculture Committee's report, incorporating feedback and comments from the discussion.
