BEIJING July 23. 2024 (Saba) - The death toll from severe floods in Sichuan Province, southwest China, has tragically risen to 14, according to local authorities. The flooding, triggered by heavy rains, has left a devastating impact on the region.
The New China News Agency, Xinhua, reported on Tuesday that 14 bodies have been recovered, while 25 individuals remain missing. Rescuers are diligently searching for those unaccounted for amidst the destruction.
The heavy rainfall caused a local river to overflow, resulting in the destruction of more than 40 houses in Xinhua Village, Hanyuan County, Ya'an City. Additionally, 15 people were injured and taken to the hospital, and 412 residents were evacuated for their safety.
China is currently in the peak of its flood season, which spans from late July to early August. During this period, heavy rains and typhoons significantly raise water levels, posing serious threats to communities along rivers, lakes, and coastal areas.
Forecasts predict that all seven major river basins in China could experience flooding during this time. There is also a heightened risk of hurricanes moving inland, increasing the frequency of severe weather events.
This summer, China has faced extreme weather conditions, including record-high temperatures in the north and heavy rains and floods in the south, exacerbating the challenges for residents and authorities alike.
