PEMBA July 05. 2024 (Saba) - The Southern African Development Community (SADC) mission in Mozambique, known as SAMIM, has officially concluded its peacekeeping operation in the troubled northern province of Cabo Delgado. This announcement marks the withdrawal of SADC forces from the region, as confirmed during a ceremony in Pemba, the provincial capital.
Mozambican Defense Minister Cristóvão Chume praised SAMIM for its significant role in supporting the Mozambican Defense and Security Forces in combatting terrorism. He emphasized the mission's contribution to eliminating terrorist threats and restoring stability on the battlefield.
Minister Chume highlighted the regional solidarity demonstrated by SAMIM, describing it as a model for Africa. Despite successes in dismantling terrorist bases and revitalizing economic activities, challenges persist with remnants of terrorist groups continuing to disrupt parts of Cabo Delgado, causing distress among residents.
In 2021, the SADC, comprising 16 member states, deployed a 3,000-strong force to assist Mozambique in addressing terrorism and violent extremism. Currently, Rwandan forces are engaged in patrols in the region as part of ongoing security efforts.
Since 2017, Cabo Delgado has been plagued by an armed insurgency rooted in social, economic, and political inequalities, resulting in widespread casualties and displacements.
