TAIPEI June 27. 2024 (Saba) - The Taiwanese Ministry of Defense announced on Thursday that it has detected 35 Chinese military aircraft and seven warships around the island in the past 24 hours, both in the air and at sea.
Local media reported that China has conducted several military maneuvers around the island since President Lai Ching-te assumed office in May last year, in response to a speech he delivered that Beijing interpreted as "Taiwan's independence recognition."
Last Monday, the Taiwanese military reported monitoring 23 military aircraft and seven Chinese warships around the island within a 24-hour period.
Taiwan has enjoyed self-rule since 1949, after nationalists fled to the island following their defeat by the Communists in a civil war on mainland China. Since then, China has considered Taiwan as part of its territory.
