BRUSSELS June 10. 2024 (Saba) - In the aftermath of his party's defeat in the European elections, Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo has tendered his resignation.
With nearly 90% of the votes counted, De Croo's party, the Open Vld (Liberal Democrats), currently holds 5.9% of the vote in the federal elections.
"The Liberals are strong, and we will come back," stated the Belgian Prime Minister Sunday night.
The resignation of the Belgian Prime Minister is not unprecedented, as it is customary in Belgium for the Prime Minister to resign after elections, facilitating the King to initiate consultations for forming a new government. Nevertheless, the Prime Minister is expected to retain his position temporarily.
In a related context, French President Emmanuel Macron announced Sunday the dissolution of the parliament and the organization of new legislative elections following the far-right's significant victory in the European elections, with a substantial gap between them and the presidential majority camp.
In the European Parliament elections, the European People's Party, the largest party in the European Parliament, which supports the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, is set to win 181 out of 720 seats in the new European Parliament, according to the latest voter survey data released by the election results portal today.
