SANA'A February 06. 2024 (Saba) -The Cancer Control Fund culminated in its achievements during the five years since its establishment to provide integrated health services to cancer patients, by implementing a map of qualitative and strategic projects that work to alleviate the suffering of patients and reduce travel to receive treatment abroad.
The strategic directions of the Fund’s leadership overcame the challenges imposed by the aggression on Yemen with indicators and service projects that represent a glimmer of hope for overcoming economic challenges and continuing to translate aspirations into projects that touch upon the concerns and suffering of patients and the interest of society.
The Fund has become a beacon of hope for cancer patients and the fight against the disease, along with other health institutions. Since the Fund began exercising its duties at the beginning of 2019, and providing its services with complete independence in the administrative and financial aspects, it has worked to support efforts to combat and prevent cancer.
During the past five years, the Fund has achieved qualitative leaps that Yemen has not witnessed in more than four decades.
A report issued by the Fund explained that the completed projects that were achieved within five years include projects implemented and under implementation to develop the infrastructure and support the operating expenses of the centers and units to continue providing their services to patients.
As well as projects that contribute to spreading awareness through the implementation of awareness, rehabilitation and training activities and campaigns.
The Infrastructure
According to the report, a copy of which obtained by the Yemeni News Agency (Saba), several projects have been completed in the field of infrastructure development, the most important of which is the completion of projects for the construction phase of the Great Messenger Center for Oncology Surgery project, at a total cost of one billion and 80 million riyals.
The modern radiotherapy unit at the National Center for Oncology in Sana’a cost two billion and 700 million riyals, and the establishment of a blood bank at the National Center for Oncology in Sana’a cost 114 million and 68 thousand.
The report indicated that oncology treatment units were restored, equipped and opened in the governorates of Saada at a cost of 34 million and 572 thousand riyals and in Al Mahwit at a cost of 28 million and 761 thousand riyals.
Hajjah Governorate, at a cost of 23,860,000 riyals, Amran, at a cost of 25,115,000 riyals, Dhamar, at a cost of 24,875,000 riyals, and Taiz, at a cost of 22,859,000 riyals.
The report pointed out that it renovated and rehabilitated the pediatric leukemia unit at Kuwait University Hospital in Sanaa, at a cost of 31 million and 621 thousand riyals, and renovated and equipped the early detection department for breast and cervical cancer at Palestine Hospital in Sanaa, at a cost of 32 million and 853 thousand riyals, and the Nuclear Medicine Center at Al-Thawra General Hospital. In Sanaa, at a cost of 23 million and 929 thousand riyals,
The children’s department, the women’s department, and some facilities at the National Center for Oncology at a cost of 12 million and 755 thousand riyals, in addition to the rehabilitation and maintenance of diagnostic equipment for the National Center for Oncology at a cost of 32 million and 831 thousand riyals.
Projects under implementation
Regarding projects under implementation in infrastructure development, the report indicated that the first phase of the Great Prophet Hospital project for oncology treatment in Saada Governorate is being implemented, at a cost of 805 million and 165 thousand riyals.
The first phase of the Al-Rasul Al-A’zam Hospital project for treating oncology in Hodeidah Governorate, at a cost of 810 million and 966 thousand riyals,
The second phase of the Al-Rasoul Al-Azam Center for Oncology Treatment project in Al-Jardaa, Sanaa, at a cost of 382 million and 672 thousand riyals.
Support centers and units
According to the report, the Fund worked to support the operating expenses of the centers and units to continue providing their services to patients, as it provided support for operational expenses and employee incentives to the National Center for Oncology in Sana’a at a cost of 774 million and 599 thousand riyals and to the Children’s Leukemia Center at Kuwait University Hospital at a cost of 461 million and 681 thousand riyals.
In addition to supporting the operating expenses of oncology treatment units in the governorates of Hajjah, Saada, Dhamar, Taiz, Al Mahwit, Amran, and Palestine Hospital, with a total cost of 375 million and 192 thousand riyals.
Medicines and medical supplies
The report indicated that the Fund financed tenders for purchasing medicines for the National Center for Oncology at a value of 7 billion, 482 million and 782 thousand riyals, and worked to directly provide chemical and targeted drugs and medical supplies to patients at a rate of 1,809 medical services at a cost of five billion, 483 million and 481 thousand riyals.
As well as supporting the costs of 90,756 radiotherapy sessions for patients at a cost of one billion, 510 million and 863 thousand riyals, and supporting the costs of performing surgeries to remove cancerous tumors for patients with (861) surgical operations at a cost of 187 million and 455 thousand riyals.
The Fund also contributed to providing 700,589 medical examination services to patients by financing the purchase of medical solutions for the laboratories of the National Center for Oncology at a cost of 246 million and 954 thousand riyals.
The Training, qualification and health awareness
The report stated that a number of (78) medical personnel for oncology treatment units in the governorates were qualified and trained in the field of general principles and management of chemotherapy at a cost of 65 million and 39 thousand riyals.
Qualifying and training (45) of the medical and administrative staff of the National Center for Oncology on the foundations of providing psychological support to cancer patients at a cost of four million and 150 thousand riyals.
Training (386) of school health supervisors in Sana'a in the field of health awareness of cancer and ways to prevent them at a cost of 12 million and 948 thousand riyals, in addition to implementing five national campaigns to raise awareness of cancer (colon, mouth, stomach, lymphoma and blood) at a cost of 52 million and 79 thousand riyals.
The report indicated that many awareness books and brochures about cancer diseases and methods of prevention were printed at a cost of four million and 336 thousand riyals, and many awareness-raising activities and productions about cancer diseases and methods of prevention were implemented at a cost of 39 million and 372 thousand riyals.
Implementing a project to raise health awareness about cancer and ways to prevent it in (69) schools in Sana’a at a cost of 18 million and 285 thousand riyals.
In this regard, the head of the Cancer Control Fund, Dr. Abdul Salam Al-Madani, explained that the goal of establishing the Fund is to support efforts to combat and prevent cancer, and to contribute to the establishment and support of centers, projects and programs related to combating this disease in accordance with a national strategy, and to contribute to financing studies and scientific research related to combating this disease according to available capabilities.
He pointed out that five years have passed since the establishment of the Fund, during which many achievements have been achieved in many fields in developing the health infrastructure for cancer treatment and establishing treatment centers and units in the governorates.
Dr. Al-Madani stressed that despite the achievements achieved, the ambitions are still greater, and we will work hard to achieve them to achieve comprehensive control of cancer diseases in Yemen.
He praised the interest of the Revolutionary Leadership and the Supreme Political Council and their continuous follow-up to provide the best medical services to cancer patients and the guidance to establish reference and pivotal hospitals equipped with the latest diagnostic equipment.
Dr. Al-Madani called for everyone’s concerted efforts, cooperation, and active participation in community awareness through social networking sites and media platforms, to prevent this disease.
