Quinu cancels flights, closes schools in Taiwan
[Thu, 05 Oct 2023 09:33:27 +0300]

TAIWAN October 05. 2023 (Saba) - The authorities in Taiwan have canceled flights in parts of its southern regions before the expected landfall of Typhoon Quinu, which is the second strong storm to directly hit the island within a month.

Agence France-Presse reported that before the expected arrival of the typhoon on Thursday more than a hundred international and domestic flights were canceled, and ferry service to remote Taiwanese islands was suspended.

Experts say that climate change has made predicting the paths of tropical storms more difficult, in addition to increasing the strength of these storms, leading to more rain and torrential floods.

More than 200 people were evacuated for fear of dust slides in the south of the island, and the authorities said that the height of the waves hitting the coast could reach seven metres.

Fishing boats were collected at a fishermen's port in Pingtung County on Wednesday, to ensure their safety, while primary schools in the Taitung agricultural area allowed children to return home early.

A major highway along the coast was closed as a precaution.

The hurricane is currently only 200 kilometers east of the island and is moving towards it at a speed of ten kilometers per hour.

The typhoon brought heavy rains to the mountainous areas of Yilan and New Taipei City in northeastern Taiwan.

Meteorological Department head Lu Kuo-chun said: “We expect the eye of the typhoon to cross the Hinchun Peninsula on the southern tip of Taiwan tomorrow morning.

After making landfall in Taiwan, Quino is expected to head towards the eastern coast of China's Guangdong Province, according to the Hong Kong Weather Observatory.

Last month, a typhoon struck Hong Kong, followed by days of rain that were the heaviest in 140 years.
