UN Human Rights Office: Palestinian journalism persists despite targeted attacks
[Fri, 02 May 2025 21:59:24 +0300]

New York - Saba:
The UN Human Rights Office stated on Friday that Palestinian journalists continue to demonstrate remarkable resilience despite facing severe, violent, and targeted retaliation against their work.

In an update on the situation in the occupied West Bank and Al-Quds, the Office noted that many journalists are being held under administrative detention, while others face vague charges of "incitement" over social media posts. These measures are part of a broader, ongoing effort to silence civil society and eliminate any form of opposition to Israeli occupation.

The Office highlighted that detained journalists—both men and women—have reported to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights that they were subjected to beatings, humiliation, sexual violence, and gender-based violence during interrogations about their journalistic work.

The UN Human Rights Office emphasized that targeting journalists violates international humanitarian law and international human rights law, stressing that such attacks must cease immediately. It also called for accountability for perpetrators, including states responsible for these violations.
