PHNOM PENH Aug. 07. 2023 (Saba) - Cambodia's King Norodom Sihamoni on Monday appointed Hun Manit as prime minister, succeeding his father, Hun Sen, who stepped down after nearly four decades in office.
According to Agence France-Presse, Hun Sen's decision, one of the world's longest-ruling leaders, stepped down and handed over power to his eldest son came days after he achieved a landslide victory in the legislative elections last July, which the United States, the United Nations and the European Union denounced as unfair.
The agency added that, at Hun Sen's request, the king issued a royal decree appointing "Dr. Hun Manit as Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia for the seventh term of Parliament."
The government of the country's new leader, 45, still has to win a vote of confidence in parliament scheduled for August 22 before it formally assumes power.
Hun Manet is a member of the standing committee of the ruling party and has been the commander of the Royal Cambodian Army since 2018.
Since assuming power in 1985, Hun Sen has worked to modernize the country and get it out of civil war and genocide, but critics also consider that his rule was characterized by the destruction of the environment, rampant corruption, and the elimination of almost all his political opponents.
Hun Sen stressed that his handover of power aims to maintain peace and avoid "bloodshed" in the event of his death while in office.
