[02/October/2022]

SANA'A October 2.2022 (Saba) - The special technical team designated to study the required measures to register the Yemeni coffee in the UNESCO's World Heritage List held a meeting here on Sunday.

The meeting, chaired by Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation Abdul Malik al-Thawr, was devoted to discussing the mechanism for the registration of coffee in the heritage list pursuant to Council of Ministers Decision No. 20 of 2022 on the registration of Yemeni coffee in the World Heritage List.

It addressed aspects related to the quality of coffee, its varieties in Yemen and its cultivation areas and the constraints faced in the cultivation of this important cash crop.

The meeting stressed the need for geographical mapping of coffee cultivation areas and identification of varieties and species, together with a plan for the Group's work mechanism and a document supported by photos and videos to ensure the inclusion of coffee in the World Heritage List as a legacy it must be preserved and what helps to restore its reputation as a natural heritage.

The Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation stressed the importance of the Yemeni coffee and the need to register it as a legacy that it must be preserved and protected from fraud and imported products.

Coffee was closely linked to the history and identity of the Yemeni people, therefore its reputation, quality, flavour and taste compared to other kinds of coffees must be preserved.
