Yemen denies law allows taping phone conversations

[14/February/2011]

SANA'A, Feb 14 (Saba) – Minister of Telecommunication and Information Technology Kamal al Jabri dismissed on Monday reports the telecommunication and information technology law being discussed by the House of Representatives aims to tape telephone conversations.

The reports were baseless and published by those who seek to block the law, the minister said, adding that the law text was very clear and did not indicate monitoring phone calls.

The law aims to regulate the telecommunication and information technology sector, spread services in line with advanced technology, deliver suitable prices, and encourage investors in this field, said al Jabri.

"In addition, it aims to activate the role of this sector in economic and social development and ensure commitment to international telecommunication and information technology accords".

Furthermore, it will help restructure the Ministry of Telecommunication and Information Technology and to establish a telecommunication and information technology body to be in charge of regulating services according to the general policies, he added.

And to make it clearer, the law must not violate the national constitution and really limits the authorization of the minister, he said, urging media to report accurate information.
