Activation workshop to intensify oversight on agricultural pesticides in Dhamar
[Sun, 10 Aug 2025 19:10:25 +0300]

Dhamar - Saba:
An activation workshop was held on Sunday in Dhamar province for directors of agriculture branches in various districts, focusing on intensifying oversight of the sale and trade of plant pest pesticides and updating data on their vendors. The workshop was organized by the governorate’s Agriculture Sector.

The workshop, attended by 12 participants and funded by the Executive Unit for Agricultural Projects and Initiatives Financing, aimed to prepare for the second phase of the Grain and Legumes Expansion Project, verify farmers' conditions, and ensure the accuracy of their data.

During the workshop, Dr. Adel Omar, head of the Agriculture Sector in the governorate, emphasized the importance of concerted efforts to ensure the success of the wheat, corn, barley, and legumes expansion project. He highlighted the need to capitalize on promising agricultural seasons and leverage available facilitations, such as contract farming and loans provided through agricultural cooperatives.

He stressed the importance of doubling efforts to enhance agricultural production, translating the directives of the revolutionary and political leadership aimed at achieving food security and self-sufficiency.

Dr. Omar also reviewed the steps taken by the Agriculture Sector in building and qualifying its cadres in areas such as farmer field schools, value chains, agricultural extension, and production skills. Additionally, he noted the provision of loans to farmers through cooperatives to secure seeds and agricultural inputs, contributing to the success of agricultural expansion efforts.

He instructed agriculture branches to support the efforts of agricultural cooperatives and strengthen their role, enabling them to contribute to revitalizing the resilient community economy. He also emphasized enhancing oversight on pesticide and fertilizer vendors, raising awareness about their risks to farmland, humans, and livestock—especially banned, smuggled, or restricted pesticides.

For his part, Engineer Ateeq Al-Abrat, the Plant Protection Officer in the province’s Agriculture Sector, explained that the workshop discussed approved mechanisms for evaluating and monitoring pesticide and fertilizer vendors, the technical requirements , procedures for granting , renewing their licenses, tightening oversight through specialists and plant protection officials.
