Madrid - Saba:
At least 302 people have drowned in Spain between January and July 2025, marking a record high over the past ten years, according to the Royal Spanish Federation of Rescue and Lifesaving.
In a statement released on Monday, the federation said: "Since the beginning of the year, the number of victims has reached 302, the highest figure for the first seven months of the year since data collection began in 2015."
The statement added that the highest number of fatalities was recorded in Andalusia with 52 deaths, followed by the Canary Islands and the Valencia region with 39 each, Catalonia with 36, and Galicia with 34.
Only Extremadura and Ceuta reported no such cases.
The Royal Spanish Federation of Rescue and Lifesaving noted a concerning rise in child fatalities, with 23 children having drowned — 20 of them in the past two months, June and July.
As for adults, reports indicate that the most common victims are men over the age of 45.
