Chicago - Saba:
Last night, former US President Joe Biden launched a scathing attack on the administration of current President Donald Trump, describing the current period as "dark days."
In a speech at an event in Chicago, Biden warned of "attacks on the rule of law" and threats to civil rights. He did not specifically mention Trump, but his intentions were clear. "There is no sugarcoating the situation—these are dark days," the former president told some 1,100 guests.
He added, "From my perspective, we are at a historical moment in which all of these things are reflected in every restriction of fundamental freedoms and the erosion of established precedents." Politico noted that Biden also criticized the current administration, saying it is working to "obscure the truth" and ensure that Congress remains a "spectator" rather than overseeing the work of the executive branch.
Biden stated, "Comrades, we must face the harsh truth about this administration: The erasure of my administration's accomplishments, the erasure of history rather than its making, the erasure of justice and equality—even justice itself—this is a reality."
He did not stop there, describing the current administration as "cruel" and condemning Trump's policy of deporting immigrants since taking office six months ago, which recently led to violent protests in Los Angeles.
Biden, who also criticized the administration's repeated attacks on the media and law firms, said, "Immigrants who are in the country legally are being dragged in handcuffs."
