An introductory workshop was held on Wednesday in the Capital Sana'a to discuss the implementation mechanism of the second phase of the water network replacement project in Old Sanaa District. The event was organized by the Yemeni Red Crescent Society in coordination with the Local Water and Sanitation Corporation in the Capital.
During the workshop, Capital Mayor Dr. Hamoud Obad highlighted the ongoing cooperation between the Secretariat and the Yemeni Red Crescent across various sectors. He praised the Red Crescent’s role in supporting local authorities to implement essential public service projects that improve citizens’ lives and alleviate their suffering.
Dr. Obad emphasized the importance of expanding the Red Crescent’s interventions and projects in Old Sanaa, a city that combines historical heritage with modern life. He stressed the urgent need to address issues in the water and sanitation networks, calling for swift action to repair and replace deteriorating pipelines to protect the historic city and reduce associated risks.
He commended the efforts and initiatives of the Yemeni Red Crescent and affirmed the readiness of local authorities and the Old Sanaa District Council to provide full support and facilitation for the success of Phase II of the water project.
Attending the event, Head of the Secretariat’s Social Affairs Committee, Hamoud Al-Naqeeb, listened as Mohammed Bilal, representative of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, stressed the importance of coordination among relevant bodies to implement water-related projects. He underlined the goal of ensuring access to clean water for Old Sanaa’s residents and noted that the project would use high-quality materials that meet international standards.
Mohammed Madaes, Director of the Local Water and Sanitation Corporation in the Capital, explained that engineering designs for the project were developed in accordance with the highest technical specifications to ensure water quality, pipe longevity, and protection of the city.
He expressed the corporation's readiness, including its staff and laboratory equipment, to conduct all necessary tests and provide technical expertise to facilitate the implementation of Phase II. He also praised the Capital Mayor’s attention and the support from the Yemeni Red Crescent.
Dr. Fouad Al-Makhadhi, Secretary-General of the Yemeni Red Crescent, reiterated the organization’s commitment to supporting local authorities and serving citizens, especially under the current difficult circumstances. He recalled that, a year ago, the water network in Harat Al-Jalaa and Al-Alami in Old Sanaa was replaced, benefiting over 8,000 people.
He noted the urgency of providing clean water to residents of Old Sanaa, a city of great historical significance, where deteriorated infrastructure and difficult access conditions limit alternative water delivery.
Engineer Sami Faye'a, Deputy Technical Director at the Water Corporation, presented an overview of the second phase of the water network replacement project, which targets Harat Al-Tawashi and parts of Harat Aqeel, Al-Shaheedain, and Al-Madrasa in Old Sanaa District, aiming to benefit 152,000 people.
