New York - Saba:
The United Nations has renewed its call for the safe and sustainable delivery of humanitarian aid, noting the increasing number of people suffering from malnutrition in the Gaza Strip.
"Amid the bombing, displacement, and destruction in Gaza, alarming reports continue to emerge of severely malnourished individuals arriving at medical facilities and hospitals in extremely poor sanitary conditions," UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said during a press conference last night.
UN agencies operating on the ground have warned that conditions in Gaza have become almost uninhabitable, calling for the protection of civilians and ensuring the safe and sustainable delivery of humanitarian aid to the area, where more than two million people are at risk of famine.
Dujarric explained that 87.7 percent of Gaza is under "evacuation orders" or in "evacuation zones," with an estimated 2.1 million people trapped in a fragmented area with virtually no services.
He pointed out that more than 1.3 million people in Gaza are in need of shelter and basic necessities, noting that harsh weather conditions, high humidity, overcrowding, and the frequent dismantling of tents and plastic sheeting are exacerbating an already deteriorating situation.
He added that no shelter materials have been allowed into Gaza for more than four months, noting the ongoing fuel crisis.
