Pittsburg - Saba:
US President Donald Trump announced major investments in artificial intelligence today, Wednesday, during the first Energy and Innovation Summit in Pennsylvania at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.
In total, the companies involved will invest approximately $92 billion in data center projects ($36 billion) and power generation sites ($56 billion).
Generative AI has become essential for major technology companies, but concerns are growing that current infrastructure cannot meet its electricity demands, especially in the United States.
Generative AI requires massive computing power, primarily for the energy-intensive processing units of NVIDIA, the California-based company that has become the world's largest by market capitalization.
Officials predict that by 2028, US technology companies will need up to five gigawatts of power for AI—enough to supply approximately five million electricity customers.
In a speech at the summit, Trump said, "We are here today believing that America's destiny is to dominate every industry and be the leader in every technology, including the world's leading superpower in artificial intelligence."
He added, "We are far ahead of China, I must say this. The factories are coming, and the construction has begun."
The summit was attended by top executives from BlackRock, Palantir, Antropic, Exxon, and Chevron.
The funding will cover the construction of new data centers, power generation, network infrastructure, and AI training and internship programs.
In January, Trump launched Project Stargate, which envisions investing $500 billion over four years in data centers in the United States, with $100 billion in contributions from OpenAI, Japan's SoftBank, and the American company Oracle.
Trump also reversed policies adopted by the administration of former President Joe Biden that restricted the development of powerful AI algorithms and restricted exports of advanced technology to some allied countries.
Trump is expected to present his plan to keep pace with the development of artificial intelligence later this month.
