Tokyo – Saba:
Japan confirmed on Friday its intention to continue negotiations with the United States in tariff discussions, aiming to reach a mutually beneficial agreement.
Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary KeiichiroTachibana stated in a press briefing that Japan will persist in its discussions with the U.S. to secure a deal, adding that the government would refrain from commenting on every statement made by U.S. officials.
Keiichiro's remarks followed U.S. President Donald Trump's announcement that his administration would begin notifying countries of the tariff rates to be imposed, stressing that the two nations had recently agreed to continue negotiations.
Two days earlier, the Japanese government declined to comment on Trump's threat to impose higher tariffs on Japanese products, stating that it would adopt a "friendly" approach in bilateral talks. Officials emphasized Japan's goal of reaching a mutually advantageous agreement with the U.S. through negotiations.
Trump recently threatened to raise tariffs on Japan to over 30%, just before the July 9 deadline suspending reciprocal tariffs. These statements come as ministerial-level talks between the two countries have so far failed to produce an agreement.
