UN Security Council discusses situation in Middle East, including Palestinian issue

New York - Saba:
The UN Security Council held an open session on Monday evening to discuss the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian issue.

Khaled Khiari, UN Assistant Secretary-General for the Middle East, stated that the expansion of Israeli settlements contributes to escalating violence in the occupied Palestinian territories.

Khiari added that the collective punishment of the Palestinian people is unjustified, stressing the "rejection of violence against Palestinians in the West Bank and the forced displacement of Palestinians from any part of the occupied Palestinian territory."

He called on Israel to allow aid to enter Gaza swiftly and without obstruction.

Algeria’s Representative:Over 18,000 children killed in Gaza

Algeria’s representative said that more than 18,000 children have been killed in Gaza, along with nearly 12,400 women and 4,000 elderly people who died while waiting for medicine. Additionally, 11,200 people remain missing, including 4,700 children and women. He questioned: Did they pose a threat to the occupation’s security? What military doctrine justifies bombing infants? This is killing for the sake of killing—the occupier’s method and the criminal’s charter.

He added that some children faced starvation not due to a lack of milk but because of rampant criminality. While the specter of famine looms, Palestinians are humiliated at the gates of so-called "aid distribution centers," which have become "death traps."

He stressed that "Gaza’s healing will not come through temporary fixes but through responsible collective measures we take together—not out of pity, but out of duty and humanity."

Russia’s Representative:Israel ignores Gaza’s humanitarian catastrophe

Russia’s representative affirmed that Israel is acting with disregard for the catastrophic humanitarian consequences in Gaza. Approximately 55,000 Palestinians have been killed, and 120,000 injured. Additionally, Gaza has been almost completely destroyed, with 80% of its land now off-limits to Palestinians. He noted that 470 humanitarian workers have been killed, including 320 UN staff.

"Unfortunately, we cannot expect our horror to end soon," he said, adding that the Israeli military has refocused on Gaza after its ceasefire with Iran.

China’s Representative:Middle East in Severe Turmoil

China’s representative stated that the Middle East is mired in severe unrest. "Israel has launched large-scale attacks on southern Lebanon and Gaza, causing numerous casualties. Since the resumption of military operations last March, over 6,000 people have been killed, and 80% of Gaza is now under evacuation orders. Due to the blockade, more than two million people face severe shortages of food and medicine."

In the West Bank, Israel has increased settlement units, approved more expansions, and demolished 500 Palestinian structures last month. Israeli military operations have killed hundreds of Palestinians and injured around a thousand. He emphasized that these actions test the international system and humanitarian law, calling for urgent measures to end the suffering and ensure humanitarian aid reaches Gaza under a distribution mechanism that upholds integrity, neutrality, and independence.

France’s Representative:Opposes settlements and Annexation

France’s representative opposed Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories and any form of annexation that violates Resolution 2334 (2016) and international law.

He noted that France has imposed 59 individual sanctions against extremist settlers who committed violence against Palestinian civilians in the West Bank.
