Belgrade - Saba:
Clashes broke out between police and pro-opposition protesters demonstrating in the Serbian capital, Belgrade. Protesters threw firecrackers and other objects at police lines in front of the presidential building, while police responded with force to contain them.
Students, who have been blocking universities in Serbia for seven months, had called on citizens via social media to join a mass protest in central Belgrade at 6:00 PM local time (16:00 GMT).
At 9:00 PM, the deadline given to authorities by protesters on June 25, during which they demanded early parliamentary elections and the removal of pro-presidential tents from the National Parliament Square, expired.
By 9:30 PM, protesters moved from Slavija Square toward police lines positioned on Kralja Milana and Kneza Miloša Streets in front of the presidential building. Despite calls from the organizers for a peaceful demonstration, fireworks and other objects began to fly, amid hostile and offensive chants directed at the authorities.
Police used force to disperse the demonstrators and remove them from Kneza Miloša Street.
