Tehran - Saba:
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, in an official letter addressed to UN Secretary-General António Guterres and members of the Security Council, demanded a clear and firm stance against the recent US military attack on Iranian nuclear facilities, which he described as a "serious violation of international law."
According to the Tasnim International News Agency, Iraqi stated in the letter on Sunday: "In follow-up to our letter dated June 13, 2025, I address you in the wake of the explicit military aggression launched by the United States in the early hours of June 21, 2025, against Iran’s peaceful nuclear facilities, including sites in Natanz, Isfahan, and Fordow. This constitutes a blatant violation of international law and the UN Charter."
He added: "We bring to your attention the gravity of this horrific aggression, in which a nuclear-armed state has carried out a military attack against a non-nuclear state and a member of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), despite its nuclear activities being fully under the supervision and comprehensive safeguards of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)."
Araghchi continued: "As you are aware, this US aggression follows previous attacks carried out by the Israeli regime, which is not a party to the NPT and possesses an uncontrolled nuclear arsenal."
He emphasized that "this reckless move by the United States not only constitutes a flagrant violation of international peace and security but also poses grave humanitarian and environmental risks."
It is worth noting that targeting nuclear facilities is explicitly prohibited under several international documents, including resolutions of the IAEA General Conference (Nos. 444, 475, and 533), as well as Article 56 of the Additional Protocol to the Geneva Conventions.
Iraqi called for "the strongest condemnation of this criminal aggression by the United States," holding the US government fully responsible—legally and morally—for the attack, which was carried out with the support of "an entity led by an internationally wanted war criminal, pushing the world toward chaos and instability."
He stated: "We expect the Security Council to convene an emergency session immediately to address this assault and issue a clear and unambiguous condemnation of the United States, a permanent member of this Council."
Araghchi warned: "The United Nations and the multilateral system now stand on the brink of a severe crisis. As Secretary-General and guardian of the UN Charter, we expect you to take a firm stance against this blatant and aggressive violation. The world is watching, and silence or inaction will only escalate the crisis and exacerbate global insecurity."
He concluded by urging "the Security Council and the UN Secretary-General to fulfill their legal and moral duties without delay."
