Berlin - Saba:
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz confirmed on Friday that the tariffs imposed by the United States on German imports threaten the German economy, noting that Berlin is looking for ways to reduce them.
Merz told Fox News: "In our opinion, these tariffs really threaten our economy, and we are looking for ways to reduce them."
The German Chancellor added that "the issue is under discussion between the US government and the European Commission, and Berlin is part of this process."
US President Donald Trump signed an executive order imposing "reciprocal" tariffs on imports, with a base rate of 10%, with higher rates. The order went into effect on April 9 for 57 countries, based on the US trade deficit with each country.
However, on April 9, Trump announced that "more than 75 countries have not responded with similar measures and have requested negotiations," effectively applying only the basic tariffs for 90 days to all countries except China.
In a legal development, the U.S. Court of Appeals ruled last Wednesday that "Trump exceeded his authority" in imposing these tariffs and ordered their suspension.
However, U.S. media reported that the ruling does not include other tariffs, such as those imposed on automobiles, steel, and aluminum. The following day, an appeals court temporarily reinstated the presidential orders.
