Washington - Saba:
Western media outlets reported, citing a US official, that US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth will not attend the meeting of the International Military Assistance Coordination Group for Ukraine, scheduled for Wednesday.
The Associated Press quoted the unidentified official as saying that Hegseth will also not participate via videoconference and will arrive in Brussels late Wednesday, after the Contact Group meeting concludes.
Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said Tuesday that Hegseth was scheduled to travel to Belgium and France this week to participate in the NATO Defense Ministers' meeting and Victory Day commemorations. However, it was not stated whether the Pentagon chief planned to attend the Ukraine Defense Contact Group meeting, scheduled for June 4 at NATO headquarters.
This is the first time since the United States formed the Defense Contact Group on Ukraine that a US Secretary of Defense will miss the group's meeting, which will be attended by more than 50 other defense officials.
