Brussels - Saba:
Josep Borrell, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, called on Israeli authorities to investigate the live fire directed at a diplomatic delegation during their visit to the entrance of the Jenin refugee camp.
Borrell stated that any threat to the lives of diplomats is "unacceptable," telling reporters in Brussels, "We urge Israel to investigate this incident and hold those responsible accountable."
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani also condemned the Israeli forces' shooting toward the diplomats as "unacceptable threats." In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Tajani wrote: "We demand immediate clarifications from the Israeli government regarding what happened. Threats against diplomats are unacceptable."
The Italian Foreign Ministry confirmed that Tajani summoned the Israeli ambassador to Italy over the incident.
Similarly, Spain "strongly condemned" the Israeli gunfire during the diplomats' visit to Jenin. A brief statement from the Spanish Foreign Ministry read: "The ministry is investigating all aspects of the incident. A Spanish national was part of the diplomatic group and is unharmed. We are coordinating with other concerned countries to deliver a joint response to this unacceptable event."
Meanwhile, Belgian Foreign Minister Hadja Lahbib demanded "convincing explanations" from Israel regarding the incident. In a post on X, she confirmed that the Belgian diplomat was "fortunately unharmed," emphasizing that "these diplomats were on an official visit to Jenin, coordinated with the Israeli military, in a clearly marked convoy of 20 vehicles."
