Moscow - (Saba):
The Russian Pacific Fleet celebrates the anniversary of its founding today, Wednesday. On May 21, 1731, the Okhotsk military port was established-the first Russian naval unit to operate permanently in the Far East.
According to the Russia Today website, the establishment of this port marked the beginning of the development of naval forces in the Far East, which later became the Pacific Fleet.
The website quoted the Russian Ministry of Defense as saying that the Pacific Fleet is currently one of the largest strategic operational formations of the Russian Navy.
The ministry emphasized that the fleet ensures the protection of Russian national interests in its designated operational area, which covers approximately half of the entire world's ocean.
According to the ministry, the Pacific Fleet's main tasks are to maintain the Russian naval strategic nuclear forces on constant alert for nuclear deterrence, protect the Russian Federation's maritime economic activity, ensure the safety of international navigation, and represent the Russian Federation's flag during joint exercises with foreign navies and conduct working visits to their ports.
Currently, the Pacific Fleet comprises a modern array of surface and surface vessels capable of performing missions in the ocean and in close-quarters waters, modern strategic missile submarines, multi-purpose nuclear and diesel submarines, missile-carrying and anti-submarine aircraft, coastal missile forces, and, of course, the fleet's most famous Marines, renowned for their exploits, whose fighters continue to perform their assigned missions to the fullest in the special operations military zone.
