Thirteen people, including four soldiers, were killed in an explosion that occurred during the disposal of expired ammunition in Sagara village, Garut district, West Java, Indonesia.
Indonesia’s Antara News Agency quoted Major General Kristomei Sianturi, head of the Indonesian Armed Forces’ Information Bureau, as saying on Monday that the victims’ bodies had been transported to the regional general hospital in Pameungpeuk.
Sianturi stated, “We are coordinating with officers at the site to secure and evacuate the area as a precautionary measure, in case of any potential further explosions.”
He added that the military would conduct an investigation into the incident, saying, “We will clarify the causes of the explosion later.”
Meanwhile, Army Chief of Staff General Maruli Simanjuntak confirmed the deadly explosion in Garut, noting that the circumstances of the incident are under investigation.
