Kyiv - Saba:
Western leaders within the "Coalition of the Willing" are holding a summit in Kyiv on Saturday, including French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, as part of a continuing effort to support Ukraine.
The three leaders departed on the same train from Poland on Saturday morning. They are scheduled to join President Volodymyr Zelensky and Tusk later.
Ahead of the visit, they called in a joint statement on Russia to agree to a "full and unconditional 30-day ceasefire" to pave the way for peace talks.
A French diplomatic source said the summit will discuss a US and European proposal for a month-long ceasefire in the Russian war on Ukraine, and that they will impose new joint sanctions on Moscow if it rejects the proposal. He added that this step has not yet been finalized.
The visit comes amid an unpredictable diplomatic climate in which the outcome of Russia's special military operation in Ukraine, which has been ongoing for more than three years, is unpredictable.
US President Donald Trump is seeking a swift peace after reversing his predecessor's policies since taking office last January.
