Tbilisi - (Saba):
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze was elected on Wednesday as the new chairman of the ruling Georgian Dream-Democratic Georgia party.
According to the Russian news agency Novosti, this came at the party's congress held today in the capital, Tbilisi, and broadcast live on Georgian television.
The party's executive secretary, Mamuka Medinaradze, announced during a session of the congress: "Based on the decision of the Political Council, Mr. Irakli (Kobakedze) has been unanimously elected chairman of the Georgian Dream party."
With this, Kobakhidze, 46, has returned to the leadership of the party, which he headed from 2021 to 2024 before assuming the position of prime minister in February 2024.
The former party chairman, Irakli Garibashvili, announced in a statement on April 25 that he had decided to leave the party and retire from politics, ruling out the possibility of joining the opposition. The Georgian Dream won the parliamentary elections last October, but the opposition refused to recognize the results and has since organized numerous marches and protests.
