Sana'a - (Saba):
The General Authority for Antiquities and Museums has warned against purchasing land within the protected archaeological sites.
The Authority confirmed in a statement received by the Yemeni News Agency (Saba) that the purchase of land within the protected archaeological sites is illegal. It noted that a few days ago, a plot of land within the protected area of the city of Al-Bayda (formerly Nashaq) in the Al-Maslub District of Al-Jawf Governorate was sold.
The Authority explained that the buyer was informed at the time of the illegality of the purchase, considering it a clear violation of the Antiquities Law.
The statement indicated that Article (13) of the Antiquities Law prohibits the establishment of heavy or hazardous industries, lime kilns, or quarries within a distance of less than half a kilometer from any archaeological site, with the exception of cases approved by the Authority, subject to the conditions it sets. It also prohibits the construction of roads, the establishment of industrial, agricultural, or residential projects, and the extension of electrical, telephone, or telegraph lines in areas adjacent to archaeological sites without obtaining approval from the Authority.
The purchase or establishment of any activity in these areas without the Authority's approval is considered a legal violation that warrants accountability.
The Authority urged the relevant security authorities to enforce the law and take the necessary measures against violators to preserve cultural heritage and historical sites. It called for reporting such violations via the Authority's phone numbers, addresses, and websites.
