Sudden fault obstructs Libyan oil production

Tripoli - Saba:

The Mellitah Gas Complex had completely stopped working due to a sudden technical failure in the power generation units, the Libyan National Oil Corporation said on Saturday.

"The Mellitah Gas Complex was completely out of operation on Friday evening, due to a technical failure in the power generation units, which resulted in a complete blackout in all the complex's facilities, including the shutdown of the gas processing plant in the complex, and the cessation of production at the Bahr Essalam gas field," the Corporation stated in a statement.

According to the statement, "the company's specialists, engineers and technicians immediately dealt with this technical failure, and took all emergency measures followed in such incidental circumstances, after resorting to operating emergency power stations, and working to restart the gas processing plant and then operating the Bahr al-Salam platform and re-producing gas."

The National Oil Corporation added that "the maintenance teams at the Mellitah Gas Complex are working to repair this sudden technical failure within a short time, and to restart the complex at its normal capacity and continue production as usual."

The Mellitah Gas Complex is one of the most prominent oil facilities in Libya, and is located about 100 kilometers west of Tripoli. The complex is operated by Mellitah Oil and Gas Company, a joint venture between the Libyan National Oil Corporation and the Italian company "Eni."

The complex plays a pivotal role in the production and processing of natural gas, as it receives gas coming from the Bahr al-Salam offshore field, and works to process and compress it before distributing it locally or exporting it to Europe via the Green Stream pipeline to Italy. It also includes facilities for treating condensates and associated gases.

Given its strategic importance, the complex is a key resource for meeting the Libyan market’s gas needs, in addition to being a major hub for exporting energy to European markets, making it one of the most vital assets in the Libyan oil and gas sector.
