International organizations warn of worsening humanitarian crisis in Sudan

KHARTOUM September 08. 2024 (Saba) -The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) said on Sunday that Sudan's war for more than 500 days exposes half the population to extreme hunger, in the world's first declared famine since 2017.

The program was written in a post on the X platform. "There is no time to lose, and humanitarian access and funding remain crucial," he said.

Last Friday, WFP announced the entry of food aid to West Darfur, with the aim of combating the threat of famine in Sudan. He pointed out that it was able to bring trucks carrying one hundred tons through the border crossing "Adrri" with Chad.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus pledged yesterday during his visit to Sudan to mobilize international efforts to support Sudan's health system, according to a statement from the Sudanese Ministry of Health.

Following talks with Sudanese Health Minister Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim in the eastern city of Port Sudan, the WHO chief said Sudan needed a lot of support from health partners.

Ibrahim said Tedros visit would strengthen relations between Sudan and the World Health Organization, which has made "great efforts in providing technical and material support," according to the statement.

Sudan's health ministry said yesterday that recent heavy rains have killed 205 people, while Sudan has recorded 5,081 cholera cases, including 176 deaths.

Since April 15, 2023, Sudan has been witnessing a bloody conflict between the Sudanese armed parties and the Rapid Support Forces, resulting in at least 16,650 deaths.

The United Nations estimates that some 10.7 million people have been internally displaced in Sudan, while another 2.2 million are seeking refuge in neighbouring countries.
