Kenyan police: least 17 schoolchildren killed in school fire

NERUBI September 06. 2024 (Saba) - Kenyan police announced on Friday that 17 students were killed and 13 others were seriously burned after a fire broke out in a student residence in one of the country's schools.

Police spokeswoman Risela Onyango confirmed that the cause of Thursday night's fire at Hillside Endracha Primary School in Nyeri County was being investigated, adding: "We are investigating the cause and will take action."

School fires are common in Kenyan boarding schools, where many students stay because parents believe it gives them more time to study without long commutes"

Students also set fires during protests over workload or living conditions. In 2017, ten students died in a fire at a secondary school in the capital, Nairobi.
