GAZA August 29. 2024 (Saba) - The World Health Organization announced on Thursday that there will be limited pauses in fighting in the Gaza Strip to allow hundreds of thousands of children to be vaccinated against polio, after an infant was found to have the first confirmed case in the Palestinian territories in 25 years.

Rick Peeperkorn, the UN agency's representative in the Palestinian territories, said the vaccination campaign, described as "humanitarian pauses," will last for three days in different areas of the war-torn enclave, starting on Sunday in central Gaza. This will be followed by another three-day pause in southern Gaza and then a third in northern Gaza.

He added, "I think they may need additional days to complete the vaccinations."

Peeperkorn indicated that the campaign aims to vaccinate 640,000 children under the age of ten, and that the campaign will be conducted in coordination with the Israeli authorities.
