Qatar, Egypt, U.S. issue joint statement on Gaza ceasefire negotiations

DOHA August 16. 2024 (Saba)— Following two days of talks in Doha, Qatar, a joint statement has been released by the mediators—Qatar, Egypt, and the United States—regarding the Gaza ceasefire negotiations.

The statement outlines the next steps in the process and highlights the progress made.

According to the statement, technical teams will continue to refine the details of a proposal put forth by Washington, aimed at bridging gaps in previous agreements and expediting the implementation of the ceasefire.

Senior officials from the involved countries will reconvene in Cairo before the end of next week to finalize the agreement based on the proposal.

The U.S., with support from Egypt and Qatar, presented a proposal to Israel and Hamas designed to align with the principles outlined by President Joe Biden and United Nations Security Council Resolution 2735.

This proposal builds on previous agreements and aims to address remaining issues swiftly.

The statement described the recent talks as serious and constructive, noting that further work will focus on the implementation details, including humanitarian concerns and prisoner arrangements.

Earlier, the Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas confirmed that since the beginning of the aggression, it has been keen to make the efforts of the mediating brothers in Egypt and Qatar successful, to reach a ceasefire agreement and end the war of genocide against our people, stressing its support for any effort that achieves a halt to the aggression.

Hamas said in a press statement, "It has held several rounds of negotiations and has provided all the necessary flexibility and positivity in order to achieve the goals and interests of our people, stop the bloodshed, and stop the genocide against them, in a way that opens the way for a prisoner exchange, relief for our people, the return of the displaced, and the reconstruction of what was destroyed by the aggression."
