GENEVA August 15. 2024 (Saba) - The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights on Thursday called for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, the release of arbitrarily detained Palestinians, and an end to the illegal Zionist occupation.
This day represents a bleak milestone for the world, Commissioner Volker Türk said in a statement, according to the Palestinian news agency Wafa, as the number of martyrs in the Gaza Strip exceeded 40,000, most of them women and children.
This unimaginable situation is largely due to the repeated failure by Zionist enemy forces to comply with the rules of war, killing an average of 130 people every day in Gaza over the past ten months.
The High Commissioner criticized the scale of Zionist army's destruction of homes, hospitals, schools and places of worship as very shocking.
International humanitarian law is very clear about the paramount importance of protecting civilians, civilian property and infrastructure, he said, calling for the internationally agreed two-state solution to become a reality.
